Dear Birmingham Ballet Students, Families, and Friends,

I began March of 2020 with the project of updating our website with details about Birmingham Ballet’s 20/21Year of Jubilee. It was to be a year of celebration as we entered into the 30th Anniversary of our Academy and the 25th Anniversary of our The Nutcracker.

So much has happened in 30 years!

BBA began in the summer of 1991. Our first performance was Sports Symphony – a show that combined the talents of dancers, figure skaters, and gymnasts on a stage that stretched over the ice at Alpine Ice Lodge in Homewood. Five years later, we presented our first The Nutcracker at Samford University.  In 2001, a second major production was added to our season of performances beginning with our original production of Peter Pan – followed by Hansel & Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and Cinderella.  Throughout the years, our Academy has achieved recognition for providing excellent training which offers our students many opportunities to dance and perform with major dance organizations around the world.  In 2010, we established a professional repertory company that created a bridge for our upper level students to work side by side with adult professionals as part of their dance education. Our The Nutcracker celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a move to the BJCC Concert Hall and its 23rd Anniversary with a move to the Alabama Theatre.  In 2012, our Nutcracker season became even more magical with the addition of The Mutt-cracker which garnered enough attention that Inside Edition and America’s Got Talent gave us a call.

Much has changed since March 2020. COVID-19 has brought many significant challenges. Most importantly, we can not safely train dancers in our studios or present performances in theaters in the foreseeable future. While we joined together to pivot and adapt to online strategies for several months, we can not successfully continue with these strategies long term.  Because of this, I have decided to refrain from opening enrollment at our Academy for the fall and Birmingham Ballet will remain closed indefinitely.

This decision is made with a heavy heart, but it is the ultimate one I must make when considering all the variables COVID-19 has interjected into Birmingham Ballet’s operations at this time.

I will miss each and every one of our dancers, families, fans, and The Mutt-cracker dogs! Yet, I know that the invisible thread that unites us as a family will never disappear. I hope that you will stay in touch and come together again when we can safely do so.

So… for now, please join me in celebrating 29 years! These have been amazing years, and YOU are an important part of them!  Together, we all made magic in the Magic City. The arts matter because they are an expression of our shared humanity. Please make it your mission to support the resurgence of the performing arts as we are able to do so in our community and beyond.

Thank you for being a part of Birmingham Ballet!
Stay Safe & Take Care,

The Mutt-Cracker

Birmingham Ballet’s The Mutt-cracker has been featured on Inside Edition and made headlines in the Chicago Tribune, USA TODAY, The UK Telegraph and newspapers all over the world. See why Birmingham Ballet’s The Mutt-cracker became an international sensation. The Mutt-cracker, a new twist a “classic tail”, is essentially Birmingham Ballet’s The Nutcracker with the addition of dogs performing along side the dancers. The holiday favorite is brought to life with masterful story-telling and exciting dancing by professionals as well as local talented aspiring youth. Exciting dancing, beautiful costumes, magical surprises, and of course… the DOGS, make this production delightfully fun!
